Having a clear view of the road in front of you is one of the most important things to have going for you when operating a motor vehicle. That job is fulfilled by the windshield and their unsung helpers, the wipers.

If you’re like me, you probably only think about your windshield wipers when you need them. And even then, only when they aren’t working well. It drives me into a quiet fury when I tap that switch, and the wipers leave a long smear right in the middle of my view. sigh

Anyhoo, let’s take a journey to explore the world of windshield wipers and how to keep them in top condition, no matter the weather.

Types of Wipers:

Most wipers are made of either rubber or silicon. Each of these materials has its pros and cons.

  • Rubber- Budget-friendly, easily available, but breaks down more quickly.

  • Silicon- Performs better and lasts longer, but more expensive.

The rubber options are likely all you need if you live somewhere with a milder, more temperate climate. But if you live in harsher temperatures or desire a better performance, check out the silicon options.

Conditions to Consider:
  • Ice and snow

    • Freezing temperatures, ice, and snow can degrade blade materials quickly. Road salt only adds to the problem.

    • Winter wiper blades contain a more durable rubber to withstand freezing temperatures. Their heavy-duty construction and frames combat slush and snow.

      • Brands: Michelin Stealth Ultra, Bosch Icon, Trico, ANCO Winter Wiper Blades

**Heated Wipers: Contain a small heating element to melt away ice and snow. Much more expensive, but for those living in harsh winter climates or who park outside during the winter, they could be a game changer. Brands- ThermalBlade, Kenworth, Polestar

  • Rainfall

    • Water-repellent coatings help remove water quickly to increase visibility faster.

    • Beam-style/contour blades distribute pressure more evenly.

      • Brands- Bosch Icon, Rain-X Latitude, PIAA Super Silicone, ANCO, Trico and many others.

  • Sun and UV damage

    • Streaking and smearing are unfortunate side effects of a damaged wiper blade. UV rays and heat can break down the rubber or silicon, leading to cracked and uneven blades.

    • Chattering and patchy clearing are other signs of wiper damage.

    • Heat-resistant silicon blades are a great option for those in hot climates.

Wiper Protection:
  • Pull your wipers up from the windshield to avoid snow covering them and/or ice forming around them. You can even cover them with a pair of old socks for better protection.

  • Cover your windshield to avoid snow/ice accumulation.

  • Use a de-icer to remove ice from blades before using them.

  • Avoid snapping the blades back against your windshield to knock snow and ice off, you risk breaking the wiper, the blade, or even your windshield.

  • Try to park in a shady spot or use a car cover to protect your wiper blades from excess sunlight and heat.

  • Clear out any dirt or debris that may have gathered under your wiper blades before using them.

  • Treat the rubber insert on wiper blades with rubbing alcohol wipes occasionally to help them last longer.

  • Inspect your wiper blades often and replace them if you see deterioration.

Choosing Wiper Blades

Making the right choice for your vehicle and driving conditions is essential. Cost does play a role as well. Here’s a rundown.

  • Budget ($10-20)

    • Basic rubber wiper blades usually last around 6-12 months

  • Midrange ($25-40)

    • Beam-style blades have better performance and are longer lasting.

  • High-end ($50+)

    • Silicon, hybrid, or heated versions are designed to last twice as long as rubber blades.

*Don’t forget to check your owner’s manual for the correct wiper blade size or measure them before purchase. *

The right windshield wipers make all the difference when it comes to visibility, safety, and comfort. Make sure you are ready for whatever the weather throws at you. If you need advice, your trusty automotive technician can help.
